Building a Computer from Scratch

I have huge admiration for people who build their own microcomputer using a microprocessor. So imagine the admiration I have for people who build a computer WITHOUT using a microprocessor!

One such guy is Ben Eater.

He has a series of videos on YouTube which show how to build an 8-bit computer on breadboards using TTL logic! The videos cover everything from building the clock, to registers, to the Program Counter, to RAM, to the ALU, etc.

It is really cool and he explains it all very clearly. So if you want to understand how computers work at a very low level, I can’t think of a better resource.

Here is a link to his YouTube channel.

He also has videos which explain lower-level concepts, such as how diodes and transistors work, and how they can be used to build “gates”, etc. work. He explains everything very slowly and calmly. Here is a link to his video on “How Semiconductors Work“. I can honestly say that nothing has helped me to understand this topic as well as this video did.

My hat is off to you, Mr Eater!

And here is a video where the man himself is interviewed:

Cosmac ELF

I mentioned in my old blog how taken I was by a very simple microprocessor-based microcomputer called the Cosmac ELF, dating back to 1976.

The microprocessor in question was the RCA 1802.

The microcomputer was really just for learning about computers. You could enter short programs via switches and then run them. To blink LEDs or whatever.

I have been thinking about this again recently and I have been amazed how much interesting stuff there is about this device on YouTube.

Here are some short videos showing people using their ELFs:

The ELF in this short video has some enhancements including the video interface from a subsequent “Popular Electronics” magazine:

There are other videos on the “Cosmac ELF 2000” and the “Cosmac ELF Membership Card”.

Then this is this long (46 mins!) video by youtuuba where he discusses exactly how he built his ELF:

Where does the time go…

I can’t believe that it’s near the end of April and this is only my fourth blog post on 2017!

Where does the time go?!

I guess I must be busy…

And the weird thing is that I have a big backlog of things that I want to blog about. They are all floating around in my mind (and in my To Do list!)

So this short post is to help to break the logjam.

Friday Night 80s

In my old blog, I mentioned how great it was that Today FM had the unbeatable combination of Ian Dempsey and Ray D’Arcy from 7 AM to midday.

Then I blogged about the mistake they were making by letting Ray go. But the station still had my favourite presenter, and my favourite show: Friday Night 80s.

Then in the middle of last year, they (the station management) decided to put an end to Friday Night 80s. I never got around to blogging about that for some reason. Second big mistake, IMHO.

I wondered at the time if another station might pick it up. Well, I did a search today and Nova has taken on the mantle. Good for them. I will give it a list tomorrow (on podcast) to see if it is up to scratch.

Today FM had better hang on to Iano with everything they have. I can’t really think of any other compelling reason for anyone to listen to the station.

Netflix’s “The OA” – Avoid at all costs

Netflix released “The OA” on Friday 16th December. I had the misfortune to hear a critic on the radio two days previously raving about the first episode which she had seen and talking about how she couldn’t wait to see the remaining seven episodes.

So we started watching and watched the last 3 episodes yesterday.

The first episode is pretty good, but each episode gets worse and worse as the series progresses. You keep hoping that it will pick up again, or at least that the last episode will provide the pay-off for which you have been waiting, but that never happens. In fact the last episode is the worst and the most ridiculous. IMDB has an overall rating of 8.1 for the series with the last three episodes getting the lowest individual ratings.

The show’s creators have defended the show and the ending. One said:

I think we felt that’d really be good about the ending of this, that our interpretation is less important than the audience’s. … but as writers, we’ve always maintained the idea that our interpretations of them doesn’t matter as much as the audience’s

With them saying gobbledygook like this in real life, it’s no wonder the show makes no sense whatsoever.

There is talk on the web of a second season. Hopefully Netflix will have too much sense to let that happen.

Normally I like to include a photo with a post but I’m afraid this series does not deserve one.

2016 – Goodbye and Good Riddance

I think everyone is pretty glad to see the back of 2016.

This was the year when we lost David Bowie, Alan Rickman and Glenn Frey at the start, Prince in the middle, and Leonard Cohen towards the end, and George Michael (on Christmas Day no less) and Carrie Fisher at the end. Along with many, many, others.

And incredible to see Carrie Fisher’s mother, Debbie Reynolds, pass away the day after she did.

Civil War continues in Syria with reports that 450K Syrians have been killed in the fighting and almost 3 million refugees have fled the country.

Terrorist attacks linked to ISIL have continued throughout the year. The first in January in Libya claimed 60 lives. The last in December in Germany claimed 12. There were multiple attacks in Germany, France, Belgium and the USA. The worst incident was in Iraq with over 300 killed. Over 1,400 died in total.

From Ireland’s perspective, there were unfortunate public votes from our nearest neighbours on either side. In a June referendum the UK decided to leave the EU (well, to be more specific, England and Wales did and Scotland and Northern Ireland seem to have no choice but to go along with them). Among many other possible implications, this raises the possibility of a border being re-instituted between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. And in November, the citizens of the USA decided that Donald Trump would be their next president. The impact of this decision on Ireland and the rest of the world remains to be seen. He will take up the office on the 20th.

So goodbye 2016, and don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

ABC Mantrap

Before I leave the topic of ABC, I need to mention a short movie/extended music video which they released in 1983, a year after The Lexicon of Love.

The video, directed by Julien Temple, combined a thin story line with performances of the songs from the album.

All very glamorous (lots of shiny suits and drinking champagne) but pretty insubstantial. It has a score of 8.3/10 on IMDB which sounds pretty impressive until you hear that there are only 37 votes (all diehard fans like myself, no doubt).

The good news is that it’s all available to view on YouTube. Here is part 1:

And here are links to the other parts:

ABC – The Lexicon of Love II

Speaking of Prince (as I have been in my last few posts) Purple Rain is one of my two favourite albums. As I mentioned in my old blog, “The Lexicon of Love” by ABC is the other.

I was listening to Martin Fry on Ray D’Arcy’s radio show the other day, and I discovered that ABC released a sequel called (full marks for ingenuity) “The Lexicon of Love II” earlier this year. How exciting! Fry himself admitted that it is either very audacious or very foolish to release a sequel to something so successful and so beloved.

You can listen to the album on YouTube.

I listened to the new album over the weekend and (with the caveat that it was only the first time hearing it) I’m afraid that I don’t think it’s a worthy successor.

Anne Dudley was involved with both albums. She is credited with “keyboards and orchestration” on the first, and with “piano; keyboards; orchestration” on the second. She is also credited as a writer on one track from the first album and two from the second.

What I think is missing from the new album, however, is Trevor Horn. For me he was the genius behind the original album. One website claims that Horn was not available, while another says that Fry wanted to “try a slightly different direction”.

In the interest of fairness, I’ll have to give it another try.

Here is a nice arrangement called “Overture” from the original album:

Prince – Nothing Compares 2 U

I said years ago that if you just wrote one song of the quality of “When Doves Cry” that you could die happy knowing that you had achieved something really great in your life.

But Prince wrote lots of great songs: Kiss, Purpose Rain, 1999, Little Red Corvette, Sign “O” the Times, Alphabet St, Thieves in the Temple, Anotherloverholenyohead and Raspberry Beret to pick but a few.

Prince, nothing compares 2 u.

Here is Prince himself singing that very song, made famous by Ireland’s own Sinead O’Connor:

Prince – New Material

If you have to look for a silver lining in losing Price far too soon (which is not at all easy) then one thing is that there seems to be a lot of new material about his highness appearing on the web (Prince’s people seemed to be very good at preventing this during his life).

Well perhaps they still are, because the first YouTube channel I was going to mention is now empty. It is called “Positivity” and contained lots of early versions of songs which were released later. Here is the link in case it starts to work again.

Here’s another one called “Prince Unreleased Music” and another called “Prince Unreleased Music 2“.

And here’s one called “Prince’s Friend“. And “Prince of Paisley Park“. And “Purple Reign“. And “Lifelinz“.

I guess we have the comfort of knowing that Prince famously has lots of unreleased material in Paisley Park and his estate may decide to release some of this in the future.
